About CraftMark Wood Studio

How It All Started

I learned the value of woodworking with my hands from my dad, John, who learned it from his own father. Dad was the kind of person who could repair almost anything—whether it was changing car brakes, building pinewood derby cars, or restoring something his kids broke in the house. My brother, Matt, and I were always his helpers (enthusiastically or not). Those experiences left us with plenty of laughs and, more importantly, lessons in self-sufficiency, problem-solving and pride in a job well done.

Finding My Craft

About 20 years ago, I turned this hands-on spirit into woodworking. For my first major project, I built a craftsman‑style cabinet under the mentorship of a professional woodworker. I was hooked. In short time, I then built an entire kitchen of handmade cherry cabinets for a small home my wife, Cheryl, and I were renovating in the little town of Three Oaks, Michigan. Over the years, I’ve honed my craft through books, classes, videos and countless hours of practice. In 2025, I officially launched CraftMark Wood Studio, finally giving my projects a real home in a dedicated woodworking studio (and giving Cheryl the garage back).

What Inspires Me

I love creating whatever sparks my interest—from practical, one-of-a-kind artistic pieces to cabinetry to equestrian-inspired projects. I often use locally sourced or reclaimed wood that I sometimes mill myself. My family jokes that after storms, I’m the guy cruising around with a chainsaw in the bed of my truck on the hunt for the next great piece of wood.

My Philosophy

For me, woodworking is about purpose, patience, and creativity. It’s my escape from the busyness of life and a chance to let my imagination take shape. Each piece I make reflects nature’s beauty, honors my family roots, and reminds me that true craftsmanship isn’t just about what you build—it’s about the joy and care that go into building it.

Balancing Wood & Work

By day, I’m a business executive in a global healthcare company and an adjunct faculty member at Georgetown University. My career keeps me focused on innovation, leadership and teaching. But woodworking gives me something different—a way to slow down, exercise my creativity in a different way, and create something tangible with my own two hands.
